Artist Statement, Stoey Stout—The Gourd Guru
“The inspiration for Gourd Guru gourd lamps came from a 2015 trip to Istanbul, Turkey. Every corner of that city oozes an exotic charm, mystery and mysticism that makes each alleyway seem like the entrance to an enchanted world. Never did I feel this more than when I walked into the Turkish lamp shops. The lights seemed to activate some primal compulsion that drew me in and held me captive by their burst of color and pattern. I was transfixed and had crazy thoughts like, “maybe I should just stand here the rest of my life. Here—surrounded by light—in an exotic land—drenched in the essence of millenia of human habitation.” I shook it off, bought four lamps and headed back to Zanesville, Ohio, where I created a sanctuary in my basement—The Turkish Room. When I plugged in my four lamps, I knew I had to have more. And so began the Gourd Guru project. I purchase my Gourds in the Amish Country of Pennsylvania and import colored beads from Turkey to insert into the Turkish-inspired designs. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.”
